It's below your meal, sitting against the ice. We pack our proteins below your meal box, directly on top of the ice to keep them as cold as possible. Proteins may shift during transit, so it’s important to match your protein with the corresponding meal box when unpacking your meals.
How do I know which meal the protein goes with?
To match up your proteins with the corresponding meal box, you can view your Past Orders from the Order tab within the app or from your Tovala account on the web.
Proteins can be used with any meal of the same protein type. For example, if you received multiple chicken breast meals in the same week, you can use any chicken breast from your delivery to cook them.
Where is the second aluminum tray?
The second aluminum tray is nested beneath the tray that's holding one of your sides. You'll need to separate the nested trays and put your protein in it when you're cooking that meal.
How do I cook my protein?
Find the second meal tray that's nested beneath the tray that's holding each of your sides. Open the vacuum sealed protein bag and slide the protein into the tray, follow any instructions on your meal's printed insert if there is a sauce or rub to apply to the protein, put that tray in the oven, scan the barcode, and press start.
Where am I supposed to store my loose protein?
Feel free to store it anywhere in your refrigerator. We recommend using a spare aluminum meal tray or a plastic container to store your proteins for the week.
My nested tray is dented. Can I still use it?
Yes, you can. There are no food safety issues that come from a dented tin. If you like, you can wash your hands and reshape the dents before adding your protein to the tray.
Why is my protein covered in moisture?
Your protein has been sitting against the gel pack in your delivery box. As the ice starts to melt, condensation appears on the outside of the gel pack. That's likely the moisture you're noticing. Feel free to wipe it off and put your protein in your refrigerator.
How do you make sure the protein stays cool enough? What if it moves around the box?
We've conducted extensive thermal testing on this packaging to ensure that the food is delivered to you safely, including testing to make sure that proteins that may have shifted in the box stay cold enough. In any case that you find your protein on top of the box, please reach out and let us know exactly where you found the protein and we'll further assist you.
How do you determine what insulation and ice packs to send me?
We put every insulation and ice pack combination that we ship through rigorous testing to determine its ability to keep food cold. Each week we look at the weather for your zip code (as well as the weather at the facilities where we make the food, and weather that the package will see enroute to you). We compare the forecasted temperatures to the capacity of our insulation and ice pack combinations to keep your food cold, and select the best combination of insulation and ice for your package.
